Un arbre à feuilles caduques. Il atteint 20 m de haut. C'est un chêne largement répandu. L'écorce est gris foncé et profondément sillonnée. Les feuilles sont étroitement ovales et mesurent 10 cm de long sur 5 cm de large. Ils ont des lobes arrondis. Les lobes se terminent par une petite pointe acérée. Les feuilles sont gris-vert foncé dessus et duveteuses dessous. Les fleurs mâles et femelles se produisent séparément sur la même plante. Les fleurs mâles sont plus faciles à voir dans les chatons tombants jaune-vert. Le fruit est un gland de 4 cm de long. C'est un tiers enfermé dans une tasse.
