Une herbe qui pousse sous l'eau. Il continue de croître d'année en année. Il a de longs tubercules rampants comme des rhizomes ou des tiges souterraines. Ceux-ci peuvent coller 1 m dans la boue. Les tiges mesurent 3 m de long et sont ramifiées. Les feuilles mesurent 1,5 à 15 cm de long sur 0,2 cm de large. La base est jointe à la gaine. Les épis de fleurs mesurent 1,5 à 6 cm de long.
