Un petit arbre. Dans la forêt, il s'agit souvent d'un arbre mal formé. Il atteint 8 m de haut et 4 m de large. La tige est dressée. L'écorce est gris foncé et rugueuse. Il a une couronne largement ramifiée. Les feuilles sont grossièrement dentées le long du bord, bleu-vert sur le dessus et blanchâtre en dessous. Ils sont en forme de coin et mesurent 25 cm de long sur 3-6 cm de large. Les fleurs sont jaunes lorsqu'elles sont jeunes puis deviennent brunes, sèches et dures. Les épis de fleurs peuvent mesurer de 15 à 20 cm de long. Les fleurs sont en épis cylindriques. Les graines sont noires et ailées. Ce sont en gros cônes de fructification ligneux.
