Herbe annuelle dressée et légèrement ramifiée. Il peut mesurer entre 30 et 80 cm de hauteur. Les feuilles ont de longues tiges. Les feuilles ont des bords entaillés ou dentés et mesurent 3 à 6 cm de long. Les fleurs sont isolées en épis à l'aisselle des feuilles. Les fleurs mâles sont peu nombreuses, petites et terminées. Les bractées sont peu nombreuses et vertes, éloignées de la fleur et longues de 5 à 6 mm. Les fleurs femelles sont à la base. Ils ont de grandes bractées vertes en forme de coupe.
