Une herbe. Elle pousse chaque année à partir de graines ou peut prendre 2 ans pour terminer son cycle de vie. Il atteint une hauteur de 0,6 à 1,5 m. Les feuilles sont en forme d'épée et opposées. Ils sont en forme de cœur à la base et n'ont pas de tige de feuille. Ils mesurent 4 cm de long. La racine est jaunâtre et mesure 7 à 8 cm de long et se rétrécit.
