Un arbuste ou un petit arbre de taille moyenne. Il atteint une hauteur de 3 à 12 m et une largeur de 1,5 à 4 m. L'écorce est lisse et rose. Les feuilles mesurent 2 à 5 cm de long et sont largement en forme d'épée. Les arbres mâles et femelles sont séparés. Les fleurs se produisent dans les tiges fleuries à l'aisselle des feuilles près des extrémités des branches. Les fruits sont en forme de cloche et mesurent 1 cm de long et pendent en grappes.
